About Institute

The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) relies heavily on the activities of the Research and Development Center to support its facilities in the fields of desalination and power generation, in addition to water treatment units. The activities of the Research and Development Center aim to ensure scientific excellence in research and development applications, develop water technologies and pioneer contributions to the Kingdom’s innovations in water technology.

History of the institute

In 1987, a research and development center was established on the same site as the power and desalination plants in Jubail. This landmark move was in recognition of the complex nature of the desalination industry and its rapid growth in capacity. The R&D Center has unique infrastructure and facilities and is considered a center of excellence promoting the technological development of the desalination industry globally.

The Water Technologies Innovation and Research Institute (WTIIRA), the research arm of the Saudi Water Authority, has played a pivotal role in serving the authority through its diverse research activities, significantly contributing to the sustainability of the desalination and water industry. The institute has carried out numerous applied research projects to enhance the cost-effectiveness of environmentally friendly desalination technologies. Additionally, the institute has collaborated with desalination plants under the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) to improve material consumption and address operational issues, resulting in significant financial savings.

The institute's activities contribute to the development of desalination technologies. Its research efforts also include solving problems faced by desalination plants, as well as evaluating and testing materials and equipment. The scope of the diverse research activities also covers analytical services that ensure the safety of the produced water in terms of chemical, microbial, and physical properties, in compliance with drinking water quality standards.

The institute has published more than 250 research papers presented in scientific journals and at local and international conferences, and has secured 46 registered and granted patents. It has also won several national and international awards. Additionally, the institute has participated in collaborative research and development programs in the field of seawater desalination with a wide range of organizations, companies, and industries at the national, regional, and international levels.
